The Historic centre is one of the most well maintained ones in all Italy with its famous Via dei Mercati, the core of the shopping area in the city and its beautiful promenade full of different palms reminiscent of the French Riviera. The city is also known for the Medical School of Salerno, which was the first and most important medical institution in medieval Europe, considered the mother of modern universities, the Lungomare Trieste, the Castello di Arechi and the Provincial Art Gallery.
Visit the Greco Roman city of Paestum originally known as Poseidonia. It became a Roman city in 273 BC and continued prospering during the Roman imperial period. It was abandoned during the middle Ages and its ruins only became news again in the 18th century, after the discovery of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Start your guided walking tour strolling around impressive and well preserved Doric Greek temples, the Forum, the amphitheatre, the Via Sacra (or Sacred Way)and tombs. We can say that these Greek temples are one of the best preserved ones in the World, competing with those located in Athens and Sicily.
Visit the Paestum museum to enjoy antique metopes, the marble statue of Hera, funerary ornaments from the necropolises, the Roman Room, illustrating the various phases of the city’s history and the highlight of this museum, the series of mural paintings which decorated Poseidonia’s tombs including the world famous Tomb of Diver discovered in 1968 and dating to around 470 B.C.
